Vesak Festival

About This Special Offer

Vesak is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar, transforming the entire island of Sri Lanka into a breathtaking festival of lights. Homes, streets, and temples are decorated with millions of colorful, glowing paper lanterns (Vesak Kuudu) and oil lamps. Massive, multi-story illuminated structures called "Pandals" (Thorana) depict stories from the Buddha's past lives. Streets are lined with "Dansalas" (free food stalls) offering everything from cool drinks to full meals to passersby, symbolizing the Buddhist virtue of giving (Dana).

Highlights

  • Marvel at massive, brilliantly lit Pandals depicting Jataka stories
  • Walk along streets decorated with thousands of glowing handmade lanterns
  • Enjoy free local food and drinks at street-side Dansalas
  • Visit beautifully serene temples decorated with oil lamps
