The Duruthu Perahera is a spectacular cultural parade held annually in January at the sacred Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, just outside Colombo. It celebrates the Buddha's hallowed visit to Kelaniya on the eighth year after his enlightenment. The procession is a rich display of Sri Lankan heritage, featuring whip crackers, fireball acrobats, stilt walkers, vibrant traditional dancers, and beautifully adorned elephants carrying sacred relics. It marks the first major cultural pageant of the year in Sri Lanka.
