About Maligawila
Maligawila is home to a staggering 14-meter (45ft) tall Buddha statue, carved from a single limestone rock. Unlike Buduruwagala, which is carved into a cliff, the Maligawila Buddha is entirely free-standing. Nearby lies the Avalokitesvara statue, another massive monolith that was painstakingly restored in the 1990s.
