Kala Wewa is one of the grandest ancient tanks, built in the 5th century. It is famous for its massive stone-cut spillway and for feeding the "Jaya Ganga," an 87km canal with a gradient so precise (6 inches per mile) that it still baffles modern engineers. It is the primary water source for the Anuradhapura region.
